Fat Moogle Pattern

Here's a pattern I wrote of the giant, fat moogle Cait Sith rides around on from Final Fantasy VII.

Giant Moogle Crochet Pattern

Pattern by Phantasmfreud (OCDrobot), character by Square Enix

Materials needed: 1) worsted weight yarn in 4 colors

(I used Red Heart Super Saver, and the yarn amounts are based upon this.)

A. Main Color yarn. 2 skeins of White, light pink, or antique white (aran) Aran is shown in the example photo’s.

B. Purple for the wings (

C. White for the tips of the wings.

D. A small strand of pink for the mouth.

2) An f/5 crochet hook (3.75 mm) and a yarn needle

3) Black, white, and light grey felt squares.

4) Fiberfill

5) Permanent marker. (optional)

Key: sc= single crochet

Inc= increase

Dec= decrease

*= repeat stitches listed between two of these marks. For example: *sc 1, inc*. You would perform one single crochet followed by an increase, over and over, until you reach the specified stitch count.

()= the ending stitch count for each row is listed between these marks.

*Please note that some parts of the pattern may not follow a traditional stitch count for the row totals. This is not a mistake; I wrote the pattern in such a way that I would end up with the shape I wanted. Just follow the directions for each row until the stitch count, as noted at the end of each row, is met then move on to the next row’s instructions. Don’t sweat the math. ^_^*

Head/Body:

Head and body are made as one single piece, top to bottom. This piece is worked in the round.

Row 1- 6 sc in magic ring. (6) Use main color.

Row2- *Inc* around. (12)

Row3- *Inc* around. (24)

Row4-* Sc 1, Inc* around. (36)

Row5- *Sc 1, Sc 1, Inc* around. (48)

Row 6-7- *Sc* around. (48)

Row8-*Sc 1, Sc 1, Sc 1, Inc* around. (60)

Row9-11-*Sc* around. (60)

Row12-*Sc 1, Sc 1, Sc 1, Sc 1, Inc* around. (72)

Row 13-14- *Sc* around. (72)

Row 15- *Sc 1, Sc 1, Sc 1, Sc 1, Dec* around. (60)

Row 16-20- *Sc* around. (60)

Row 21- *Sc 1, Inc* around. (90)

Row 22-51- *Sc* around. (90)

Row 52- *Sc 1, Sc 1, Sc1, Sc1, Dec* around. (72)

Row 53-54- *Sc* around. (72)

Row 55- *Sc 1, Sc 1, Sc1, Dec* around. (54)

Row 56-57- *Sc* around. (54)

If you haven’t begun stuffing yet, now would be good. Add more as you complete more rows until the end.

Row 58- *Sc 1, Sc 1, Dec* around. (36)

Row 59- *Sc* around. (36)

Row 60- *Sc 1, Dec* around. (18)

Row 61- *Sc* around. (18)

Row 62- *Dec* around. (9)

Row 63- Dec, Dec, Dec. (6) This is the last row, sew hole shut.

Legs:

Make 2. The legs are worked top to bottom. They begin in an oval pattern, and continue in the round. Use main color.

Row 1- Ch.11, in 2nd chain from hook, work 9 Sc in row, then 2 Sc in final chain. Continue working in the bottom loops of the row (the opposite side of the chain). Work 9 Sc in row, then 2 Sc in final chain. (22) This completes the oval. Stitches in the oval are not joined, rather worked in the round.

Row 2- 2 Sc in next stitch, 9 Sc in row, 2 Sc in next stitch, 11 sc in row. (24)

Row 3- 3sc in next stitch, 10 sc in row, 3 Sc in next stitch, 13 Sc in row. (28)

Row 4- *Sc* around. (28)

Row 5- 4 Sc in next stitch, 13 sc in row, 4 Sc in next stitch, 14 Sc in row. (34)

Row 6- 2 Sc in next stitch, 2 Sc in next stitch, 15 Sc in row, 2 Sc in next stitch, 2 Sc in next stitch, 15 sc in row. (38)

Row 6- *Sc* around. (38)

Row 7- Sc 1, 2 Sc in next stitch, 2 Sc in next stitch, 2 Sc in next stitch, 16 Sc in row, 2 Sc in next stitch, 2 Sc in next stitch, 2 Sc in next stitch, 19 Sc in row. (44)

From this point on, rows will no longer take an oval shape, and will instead switch to rounds (and be worked in rounds as such). Feel free to begin filling with fiberfill as you work along.

Row 8-12- *Sc* around. (44)

Row 13- *Sc 1, Sc 1, Sc 1, Dec* around. (33)

Row 14- *Sc* around. (33)

Row 15- *Sc 1, Sc 1, Dec* around. (22)

Row 16-17- *Sc * around. (22)

Row 18- *Sc 1, Dec* around. (12)

Row 19- *Dec* around. (6)

Row 20- Dec 1. (5)

Sew any hole remaining. The last row made of the leg, at the bottom, is a good place to center the feet later when you sew them on.

Feet:

Make 2. The feet are worked front to back.

Row 7-8- *Sc* around. (38)

Row 9- Sc 1, 2 Sc in next stitch, 2 Sc in next stitch, 2 Sc in next stitch, 16 Sc in row, 2 Sc in next stitch, 2 Sc in next stitch, 2 Sc in next stitch, 19 Sc in row. (44)

Row 10-11- *Sc* around. (44)

Row 12- *Sc 1, Sc 1, Sc 1, Sc 1, Dec* around. (38)

Row 5-7- *Sc* around. (24)

Row 9- *Sc* around. (18)

Row 54- *Dec* around. (6)

Row 55- Dec, Dec. (4) The arms are now complete. Sew any hole shut, and attach to body.

Thumbs:

Make 2. Thumbs worked in the round. Use main color. Thumbs are worked top to bottom.

Row 1- 6 sc in magic ring. (6)

Row2- *Inc* around. (12)

Row3-* Sc 1, Inc* around. (18)

Row4-5- *Sc* around. (18)

Row 6- *Sc 1, Dec* around. (12)

Row 7- *Sc* around. (12) Thumbs now complete, attach open ends of thumbs to arm pieces.

(I placed the thumbs around where row 46 is on the arm pattern.)

Wings:

Make two. Wings are worked in rows, not the round. Use purple yarn.

Please note: Rows 2-5 are optional. I worked those extra row so I could fold the first four rows of the wings over the top of the next four rows and sew it down. The purpose of this was so that I could slip some pipe cleaners inside. ^_^ You don’t have to tak this step if you do not wish to have bendable wings for your moogle. If you don’t want the wings to bend, skip rows 2-5 and continue with row 6. If you do want the wings to bend: make the extra rows (2-5), fold them at row 4, insert some pipe cleaner wire, and sew the flap down with the pipe cleaner trapped inside.

Ch. 16

Row 1- Starting in second ch. from hook, work Sc 1 in each ch. to the end. (15)

Row 2-8- *Sc* across. (15) (Basically, if you don’t want bendable wings, only work 3 rows here instead of 7.)

Row 9- *Sc* across the next 10 stitches. Turn. (10)

Row 10-12- *Sc* across. (10)

Row 13- *Sc* across the next 5 stitches. Turn. (5)

Row 14-16- *Sc* across. (5)

Now, to finish the wings: Sc around the edges of the wings, and make a picot (ch. 3, slip stitch the 3rd ch. in hook) at the “tips” of the wings. This makes them bat-like. ^_^ Slip stitch when you reach the first sc you worked around the wing’s edge, fatsen off, and weave in ends. Attach them to the moogle’s back.

Wing Tips:

Make2. Wing Tips are worked in rows, not the round. Use white yarn. Wing Tips are worked from the base to the tip.

Ch. 3

Row 1- Starting in second ch. from hook, work Sc 1 in each ch. to the end. (2)

Row 2- Dec. (1)

Row 3- Sc. (1) The wing wip is now complete. Attach the top points of the wings.

Hope you enjoy your moogle, and if you need help just ask! ^_^
